Reflecting on Resilience: Spartek’s Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic
As we near the five-year mark since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s an opportune time to reflect on how Spartek rose to meet the challenges of an unprecedented global crisis. Through forward-thinking strategies, innovative pivots, and a constant commitment to our employees and community, Spartek demonstrated resilience and adaptability that continue to shape our approach to business today.
Forward Thinking in Supply Chain Planning
The COVID-19 pandemic caused global supply chain disruptions that many businesses struggled to navigate. However, Spartek’s proactive planning allowed us to minimize disruptions and maintain operational continuity.
- Partnerships with Suppliers: Early in the pandemic, Spartek engaged in proactive discussions with our key suppliers to identify potential challenges. By fostering transparent communication, we secured priority access to critical materials and ensured steady supply chains.
- Diversifying Sourcing: Recognizing the risks of dependency on single suppliers, Spartek diversified its sourcing strategy. We identified alternative suppliers and, in collaboration with our customers, worked to spec in alternative materials where possible. These steps ensured our ability to continue delivering high-quality products despite material shortages.
Through these measures, Spartek remained a reliable partner to our customers, demonstrating the importance of agility and foresight in uncertain times.
Pivoting to Manufacture Face Shields
When the need for personal protective equipment (PPE) surged during the pandemic, Spartek stepped forward to make a difference. Partnering with Stellar Mold & Tool in Galesville, WI, we quickly retooled our operations to produce face shields for frontline workers and healthcare professionals.
This project would not have been possible without the incredible support, time, and expertise of Stellar Mold and Tool’s engineers, designers, and machinists. Their efforts over a two-week period delivered the design and injection mold for the Quick Response Shield, making it possible for Spartek to move swiftly into production.
To address challenges in securing a consistent supply chain for elastic straps, Spartek collaborated with RBI Machining in Sparta, WI. Their team played a critical role in developing and delivering a tool for straps in under a week, ensuring that shield production could continue seamlessly.
Another key partner in this initiative was Tel-Mar Steel Rule and Die, which provided consistent, on-time deliveries of die-cut face shields. Their reliable supply chain support was instrumental in keeping Spartek’s production lines moving.
By leveraging these strategic partnerships, Spartek not only met urgent community needs but also demonstrated the power of collaboration and innovation in times of crisis.
- Rapid Design and Production: Leveraging Stellar Mold’s expertise in mold-making and Spartek’s manufacturing capabilities, we designed and produced face shields in record time. From concept to production, our teams worked around the clock to meet urgent demands.
- Supporting Frontline Workers: Spartek delivered thousands of high-quality face shields to hospitals, clinics, and essential service providers. In addition to selling face shields to meet public demand, Spartek made considerable donations to local nursing homes and hospitals to help protect frontline workers and ensure they had sufficient PPE during critical times.
- A Testament to Adaptability: This initiative not only showcased our ability to innovate under pressure but also reinforced our commitment to supporting the community in times of need.
By pivoting to face shield production, Spartek helped address a pressing societal challenge while maintaining operations and preserving jobs.
Keeping Employees Employed
During a time when layoffs and furloughs were widespread, Spartek prioritized keeping our workforce intact. We understood that stability was essential for our employees and their families during the uncertainty of the pandemic.
